چکیده

CONTEXT Only a few studies evaluated the digestive alterations caused by low frequency noise (LFN) and most focused only on mucosal alterations. OBJECTIVES To investigate the morphological injury of LFN-exposed gastric wall, beyond the epithelial layer. METHODS Wistar rats were exposed to low frequency noise (LFN), during increasing periods, 1 to 13 weeks. A control group was kept in silence. Gastric specimens were studied using: (i) light microscopy with hematoxylin-eosin and immunostaining for collagens; (ii) transmission electron microscopy; (iii) morphometry allowing statistical analysis. RESULTS Submucosa of all LFN-exposed animals exhibit increased thickness with fibrous proliferation. Transmission electron microscopy showed massive collagen deposition. Immunostaining identified collagen IV as responsible for the increased thickness. Morphometry allowed the demonstration of a significant difference of thickness between control and exposed groups. Vascular alterations included: i) intima proliferation and thickening, rupture of the internal elastic lamina, thrombotic changes; ii) thickening of the media; iii) after 9 weeks of LFN-exposure, we found new formed vessel presenting tortuous and twisted. There is a significant difference of arterial wall thickness between control and exposed groups. CONCLUSIONS Deeper layers of gastric wall undergo alterations, including fibrosis of the submucosa caused by collagen IV deposition, an early marker of neoangiogenesis. Vascular alterations included thickening and thrombotic phenomena, but also images of newly formed vessels. This study suggests that, at least in the stomach, LFN-induced fibrosis could be linked with neoangiogenesis.

Noise-induced gastric lesions: a light and scanning electron microscopy study of the alterations of the rat gastric mucosa induced by low frequency noise.

INTRODUCTION Exposure to low frequency noise (LFN) can lead to vibroacoustic disease (VAD), recognized as a systemic disease with lesions in a broad spectrum of organs. Although gastrointestinal complaints are common among individuals exposed to noise, only few studies tried to evaluate the digestive lesions. The authors performed this study in order to investigate gastric lesions in an animal ...

Background and Purpose: Although the evolution of industrial systems toward digital technologies decreased the exposure to high levels of noise, it has created some problems encountered with low level and provoking noise (low frequency noise). In the present work, the mental performance of students exposed to low frequency and reference noises at low and high levels (45 & 65 dB) were studied....

Noise-induced duodenal lesions

Vibroacoustic disease (VAD) is a systemic disease that results from long-term exposure to low-frequency noise (LFN). VAD can cause lesions in several organs. Noise-exposed individuals frequently present digestive symptoms, but only a few studies have attempted to evaluate gastrointestinal lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the duodenal alterations in VAD, using an animal model of...

Morphological and histochemical investigation of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) abomasal mucous membrane by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

Morphological and histochemical study of the abomasal epithelium in camel (Camelus dromedarius) wascarried out by light and scanning electron microscopes. The lining of the abomasum was divided into fourregions, i.e. cardiac, pseudocardiac, fundic and pyloric. Our investigation revealed that the cardiac andpseudocardiac regions occupy a wide part of the abomasum in camel and it reaches approxim...

Cannabinoid CB1 Receptors Mediate the Gastroprotective Effect of Neurotensin

Objective(s) Several lines of evidence indicate that neuropeptides exhibit protective properties against gastroduodenal ulcers. Neurotensin, a gut-brain neuropeptide, is implicated in a number of physiological processes in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues including gastrointestinal tract. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the gastroprotective potential of either p...
